Dev Anand - Biography, Filmography (Films) - Videos



Birth  September 26, 1923

Dev Anand took his degree in English Literature from Government College, Lahore. He came to Bombay and worked in accounts office. He was attracted to theater because of his brother Chetan Anand. He tried to get into films as he was impressed by the acting of Ashok Kumar.   He was offered a role in the 1946 film 'Hum Ek Hain'. He stuck a friendship with Guru Dutt during this film.

Dev Anand acted as the leading man opposite Kamini Kaushal in 'Ziddi' in 1948. The film featured the first film song of playback singer Kishore Kumar, "Marne ki duayen kyon mangu", a solo picturised on Dev Anand.

Dev Anand started producing films after the success of Ziddi and started Navketan Films for the purpose. The first film was Afsar directed by Chetan Anand. The second film was a crime thriller, Baazi (1951)  directed by Guru Dutt and it was a super hit. Dev Anand continued producing films till his death under Navketan banner. His brother Vijay Anand also directed number of films Dev Anand himself directed number of films in later years. Dev Anand continuously gave hits and successful films till 1978. From 1978, lean period started but he continued acting and producing films.


Dev Anand also played some roles with a negative shade, like in Jaal. Jaal was also a big success and was number 3 in box office collections in 1952.  In 1954 film Taxi Driver was declared a hit. He starred in number of box office success movies in 50s. One can see from his filmography that he gave one top 10 hit every year till 1978.

Johnny Mera Naam  in 70s was a big hit and Dev Anand continued acting as evergreen hero while his contemporaries Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar slowed down due to their putting on weight as well as due to box office failures. He introduced new heroines like Zeenat Aman and Tina Munim. At the age of 55, he could act beside Tina Munim and create a hit.

Dev Anand with his son traveled to London and he died while staying there in a hotel, in the hotel room at 03:30 hours GMT on Sunday December 3, 2011 in his sleep after a sudden cardiac arrest.  On December 10, 2011, he was cremated in West London's Putney Vale Crematorium.

1946
Hum Ek Hain (Debut film under Prabhat Talkies.)


After completing BA degree in English Literature, Dev Anand moved to Bombay and started working.  His elder brother, Chetan Anand was  a member of the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA). Dev Anand also aspired to become a film actor as he was impressed by Ashok Kumar's acting in films like Achhut Kanya and Kismat. Dev Anand picked up the art of acting and approached Babu Rao Pai of Prabhat Film Studios. Babu Rao Pai was impressed by the smile,  beautiful eyes and tremendous confidence of Dev Anand. He was offered the lead role in Prabhat Films' Hum Ek Hain (1946), a film about Hindu-Muslim-Christian unity. Dev Anand played the role of the son a  Hindu Zamindarini, in whose house, a muslim and christian also grow up along with Dev Anand. His heroine  was Kamala Kotnis.

1947
Mohan - Aage Badho

The next film he did was Aage Badho in 1947 directed by Yeshwant Pithkar. The  music director was Sudhir Phadke. The next film was Mohan in 1947 (Actors:Dev Anand, Hemavati, Alka, Vimala Vashishtha, Bhutt Kashar, Gokhle, S P Rane, Misra, Kardar Film;  Director: Anandinath Banerjee, Lyricist: Qamar Jalalabadi, Music Director: Husnlal Bhagatram)

Hum Bhi Insan Hai (1948) directed by Phani Majumdar and the music was composed by H. P. Das and Manna Dey.

Dev Anand’s first film with Suraiya was Vidya (1948) directed by Girish Trivedi and music by S. D. Burman. During the shooting of the song Kinare kinare chale jayen ge of the film the boat capsized and Dev Anand saved Suraiya from drowning. After this incident Suraiya fell in love with him.

Hum Bhi Insan Hai was directed by Phani Majumdar and the music was composed by H. P. Das and Manna Dey.

In Jeet and Shair, Suraiyya was the heroine.

Stage - Sazaa - Sanam - Nadaan - Do Sitare - Baazi (Guru Dutt's directorial debut and a huge success, and Dev Anand became a big star) - Aaram

Do Sitare and Sanam films also had Suraiyya. Suraiyya was getting higher credit than Dev Anand in film casting and also in general people are crediting her with the reasonable success of the films. Dev Anand got his chance to prove his talent with Baazi. Also, the family members of Suraiyaa had not approved her proposal to marry Dev Anand. They stopped acting together also.

Baazi was Dev Anand's second production as producer under Navketan Films banner. It was a debut film for Kalpana Kartik as heroine and Guru Dutt as director. And Baazi became a super hit and was number 2 of the year in box office collections.

Raahi and Hum Safar were  hits for Dev Anand in 1953. His importance in Bollywood had  grown further.

Kashti - Baadbaan

Dev Anand and Kalpana Kartik acted in number of movies after the success of Baazi. During the filming of Taxi Driver, Dev Anand proposed to her and they had a secret marriage. Taxi Driver is also a super hit movie of Dev Anand. It was third in that year in terms of box office.

Dev Anand was able to take new heroines in his films and make films successful. Nutan was the heorine in Paying Guest. In Dushman, Dev Anand once again played a role with negative character.

Kala Pani (Dev Anand, Madhubala) - Filmfare Award for Best Actor

Solva Saal  - Amar Deep

In Kala Pani, he played the role of a son who was willing to go to any lengths to clear his framed father's name. He won his first Filmfare award for Best Actor for the film and the film was also a box office success. Madhu was her usual beautiful self in the movie.

Teen Devian

Guide is his first colour film. The film in which Waheeda Rehman played the role of a wife who moves away from her husband to another man (role played by Dev Anand)  was based on the novel of the same name by R. K. Narayan. Dev Anand himself was took the initiative  for making the film version of the book. He met and persuaded Narayan to give his assent to the project.  Dev Anand got in touch with his friends in Hollywood to launch an Indo-US co-production that was shot in Hindi and English simultaneously and was released in 1965. Guide was directed by his younger brother Vijay Anand. Dev played Raju, a voluble guide, who supports Rosy (Waheeda) in her bid for freedom.But, he is also encouraging her for with his actions. Director Vijay Anand changed the story from the initial script to explain the reason for Waheeda Rehman to move away from her husband. English film does not have that part.  Dev Anand  gave a solid performance in the role of a man involved in love, shame and salvation.

Dev Anand and Vijay Anand came out with another hit Jewel Thief, based on thriller genre which had Vyjayanthimala, Tanuja, Anju Mahendru, Faryal and Helen and it was very successful.

Duniya was a film of friendship and romance between Dev Anand and Vyjayantimala, who were childhood friends but get separated and meet again after a long gap.

Johny Mera Naam was also a thriller produced with the comination of  Dev and Vijay Anand. It was  was a big hit and the film made Hema Malini a big star.

Gambler - Tere Mere Sapne

In 1971, Dev Anand's directorial effort, Hare Rama Hare Krishna depicted the prevalent hippie culture. Zeenat Aman, played a girl gone into the hippie culture with  the mini-skirt and pot-smoking habit. She became an overnight sensation. Dev Anand was credited with identifying and filming current and  topical themes. Tere Mere Sapne, an adaptation of A. J. Cronin's novel, The Citadel in which Mumtaj acted and Vijay Anand directed was also successful. He paired again with Zaheeda in Gambler, which also was  a success.
