Detailed Biography - Bollywood Singing Career of Lata Mangeshkar

Lata Mangeshkar is daughter of Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar,  a classical singer and theater actor.
Mangeshkar took her first lessons from her father. At the age of five, she started to work as an actress in her father's musical plays (Sangeet Natak in Marathi). In 1942, when Lata was 13, her father died of heart disease. Master Vinayak, the owner of Navyug Chitrapat movie company and a close friend of the Mangeshkar family, took care of Deenanath's family.

Vinayak gave Lata  a small role in Navyug Chitrapat's Marathi movie Pahili Mangalaa-gaur (1942). In the film, she sang "Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai."  Her first Hindi song was "Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu" for the Marathi film, Gajaabhaau (1943).

Lata Mangeshkar moved to Mumbai in 1945 with Master Vinayak. She started taking lessons in Hindustani classical music from Ustad Amanat Ali Khan . Lata and her sister Asha played minor roles in Vinayak's first Hindi-language movie, Badi Maa (1945). In that movie, Lata also sang a bhajan, “Maata Tere Charnon Mein.”  She sang “Paa Lagoon Kar Jori” for Vasant Joglekar's Hindi-language movie Aap Ki Seva Mein (1946),

As Ustad Amanat Ali Khan migrated to newly formed Pakistan, Lata continued her learning of classical music under Amanat Khan Devaswale. Pandit Tulsidas Sharma, who was a pupil of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, also helped in her training. Music director Ghulam Haider  gave Lata  the song “Dil Mera Toda,” in the movie Majboor (1948). Lata took lessons in Urdu from an Urdu to improve her singing hindi film songs many of which had Urdu words. One of her first major hits was “Aayega Aanewaala,” a song in the movie Mahal (1949), was composed by music director Khemchand Prakash.

What prompted you to take up the role in Dhoom 3?

It was the script. They came up with a really good story and were not just relying on the Dhoom franchise. For me honestly, from a personal perspective, it was the performance and the dance sequences. For me to get the chance to experience circus performance and acrobats was fabulous!

What has been the most difficult challenge for you in the industry?

The language. Learning the language has been the most challenging thing. It’s been physically draining. The number of hours I’ve put in is huge. And no matter what, you’re constantly struggling because the fact is that it’s not your language.
