The Ram Madhvani-directed biopic with Sonam playing the central character has earned an impressive Rs 4.70 crore on Friday, the first day of its release and another Rs 7.60 crore on Saturday thus bringing its current total to Rs 12.30 crore.
The opening weekend numbers could touch Rs 20 crore. The film was released on 700 screens only.
Sonam Kapoor plays the role of chief purser Neerja Bhanot in the film. Shabana Azmi and Yogendra Tiku play her parents.

Madhubala was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi,on 14 February 1933 to parents of Pathan origin, Ataullah Khan and Begum Ayeesha. Her family relocated to Mumbai. Her father along with child Madhubala, began to pay frequent visits to Bombay film studios to look for work. At the age of 9, Madhubala started acting in films and started helping her family financially.
Madhubala's first movie, Basant (1942), was a box-office success. In this film she acted as the daughter to a mother played by actress Mumtaz Shanti. As a child actress she acted in several movies. Actress Devika Rani advised her to assume the screen name 'Madhubala', Her first lead role, at the age of 14, was opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947) In this film, she was credited as Mumtaz and then onwards her screen name became 'Madhubala'. She achieved stardom and popularity in 1949 in the film, Mahal. The film was a big hit in 1949. Subsequently, she appeared in the box office hits Dulari (1949), Beqasoor (1950), Tarana (1951) and Badal (1951).
During the 1950s, Madhubala acted in various and various genres of film being made at the time. Her 1950 film Hanste Aansoo was the first ever Hindi film to get an "A" – adults only – rating from the Central Board of Film Certification. She played the role of an uninhibited village beauty in Tarana (1951). She played the traditional Indian woman in Sangdil (1952). She showed her talent in a comic role as Anita, a heiress in Guru Dutt's Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955). In 1956, she acted in costume dramas such as Shirin-Farhad and Raj-Hath.
Howrah Bridge - 1958 Hit Film
In Howrah Bridge, she played the role of an Anglo-Indian Cabaret singer involved in Calcutta's Chinatown underworld. Among some more successful films, she played opposite Bharat Bhushan in Phagun; Dev Anand in Kala Pani; Kishore Kumar in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi; and Bharat Bushan again in Barsaat Ki Raat (1960). Then in 1960, she appeared in the magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam.
Madhubala acted in as many as seventy films from 1947 to 1964 as lead actor.
Mughal-e-Azam was released on 5 August 1960, and became the biggest grossing film at that time, a record that was broken by "Sholay" in 1975 only.
In 1960 Madhubala was at the peak of her career and popularity with the release of Mughal-e-Azam and Barsaat Ki Raat. Subsequent to this her health deteriorated, but still films like Jhumroo (1961), Half Ticket (1962) and Sharabi (1964) were completed and performed above average at the box-office.
Madhubala had ventricular septal defect (hole in her heart) which was detected while she was shooting for Bahut Din Huwe in Madras in 1954. Due to this she suffered a lot for many years and she breathed her last on February 23, 1969, shortly after her 36th birthday.

Story
A dispatch clerk (Bhagwan Dada) dreams of becoming a stage star. His efforts are aided by the reigning star Asha (Geeta Bali) with whom he falls in love. The love story is interspersed with tragic events in his home, the death of his mother (Pratima Devi), estrangement from his father (Badri Prasad) and the villainy of his brother-in-law (Nihal).

Ajay Mehra ( Ghayal-1990), after finishing off his life sentence, starts a newspaper called Satyakam. and manages to make a credible name for himself in investigative journalism. Four teenagers who happened to have received bravery medals from him once, are out on photography expedition and accidentally record a murder on a camera.
