Bachchan made his film debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's National Award winning film Bhuvan Shome. He made his acting debut in 1969 in the film Saat Hindustani as one of the seven hindustanis. He won a national award for best debutant actor for the movie.

He worked in 1971 along with Rajesh Khanna in the hit film Anand. Director Prakash Mehra cast him in the leading role for the film Zanjeer (1973) as Inspector Vijay Khanna. Amitabh Bachchan delivered hits every year in his career and also maintained his health despite various health problems and is active still now in the film field still doing successful films as a major actor in movies.
Bachchan has won numerous major awards in his career, including four National Film Awards, three of which are in the Best Actor category, and fourteen Filmfare Awards.
